ABSTRACT

Given the many social and economic inequities that have been magnified globally by the COVID-19 pandemic, new approaches to leadership are required. The author shares her experience as a teacher and learner in Canada, Serbia, Brazil, and Germany, and proposes that the Circle of Health framework has the potential for guiding the transformative change required to rebuild social relationships and structures postpandemic. The Circle of Health was developed in 1996 on Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada, through a unique government-community partnership in response to the need for transparent and multisector, interdisciplinary collaboration on health promotion. Training and development of supplemental materials were undertaken by the author and her colleagues to create a shared understanding of health promotion, to promote partnerships across sectors, and to engage in systematically integrating the many concepts of population health in policy and practice. Since its creation, it has been used globally by educators, policy makers, researchers, and students in many disciplines to holistically address complex societal issues. The innovative ways in which the Circle of Health continues to be embraced provide the foundation for this chapter, challenging the reader to be responsive, creative, and purposeful in rethinking and repositioning health promotion as an approach to global leadership. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022. CHINA'S POLITICAL WORLDVIEW AND CHINESE EXCEPTIONALISM: International Order and Global Leadership ; : 219-234, 2021.
Article in English | Web of Science | ID: covidwho-1969661

ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes Chinese responses to the events of the Covid-19 global pandemic and identifies themes of Chinese exceptionalism and Chinese benevolence in Beijing's pandemic-related global interactions. Three core narratives have framed China's response: that China is a responsible power;that China is self-sacrificing;and that China is superior to the West. At the same time, however, the events of the Covid-19 pandemic have also generated considerable criticism of the Chinese government, and how it being perceived as being good and different from the West. All of these factors have long-term implications for China's claim to global leadership and the attractiveness of its political worldview.

ABSTRACT

Betina Szkudlarek, a highly valued member of the editor team of Advances in Global Leadership (volumes 12–14) is resigning, to our regret, to dedicate more time to her work with refugees. Based on her keynote speech at the 2021 ION meeting, the interview demonstrates how scholars can make a tangible contribution to today's highly complex problems that go beyond our research findings. Betina explains the impact of COVID-19 on migrants and refugees and provides examples by various stakeholders. She also describes how her research expanded into partnerships with multiple governments, corporations, and service organizations. Betina is a wonderful example of a scholar-practitioner who is willing to research grand challenges and also make extensive practical contributions to resolving them.Betina is an Associate Professor of Management at the University of Sydney Business School. She publishes on the topics of cross-cultural competence, intercultural communication, and international transitions. She is a Strategic, Sustainability and Growth Consultant with the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, where she works with the recipients of the UNAOC's and BMW Group's Intercultural Innovation Awards. © 2022 by Emerald Publishing Limited.
